As most Cardinal fans expected not much happened during the winter meetings for the Cardinals. Many of the big time relievers have been picked up but the one that remains is Brian Fuentes. Many sources say that the Cardinals are now the front runners for the Rockies closer. The problem is that he most likely would require around $30 million for 3 years and we have not seen the cardinals shell that kind of cash out for a long time.
If he is not signed soon he will stay in Colorado for $7 million and some change for the 2009 season. I believe if the cardinals can put an offer together for around $9 million a year for 3 years he would rather play for a team that will contend next year than for the Rockies who are trying to cut payroll. The problem with that is the Angels are also interested and obviously they are contenders even more so than the Cardinals so Brian might have a few options if the money gets that low.
Well we will know more soon I really hope the Cardinals can pull the trigger and get Fuentes in as out closer because if not we are looking at maybe another year with Isringhausen and I am sure no one wants that. As a final note I am a huge fan of the Khalil Greene pick up, having power at the shortstop position will be a huge improvement over last year, what do you guys think?
