St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Friday that forward Keith Tkachuk has agreed to return to the club for one more year.  The Blues and Tkachuk have been having talks about a return since being ousted from the playoffs in April.  The deal is reportedly worth $2.15 million.

The club has six unrestricted free agents going into the offseason including Manny Legace, Keith Tkachuk, Dan Hinote, Brad Winchester, Mike Weaver, and Trent Whitfield. Legace won’t be back, as Chris Mason has earned the starting job and Legace will probably be too frustrated to return as a backup. So that’s $3 million that will come off the books. Mike Weaver probably won’t be back either, even though he was a great role player for the club this season. With EJ returning, Eric Brewer expected to be healthy, and the possibility of Alex Pietrangelo being ready for the NHL, the team should have enough depth on the blue line. This gives the Blues another $500,000 to spend.

St. Louis also should have a little more room under the cap if Keith Tkachuk doesn't return. A lot of people see him being traded to Boston at or near the deadline. They could always bring him back like the Blues did after the last time they dealt him, but it may be time for the Blues to move on. Marian Hossa will likely be a free agent again. I doubt the Blues could sign him, but we can always hope.

Latest rumors for the Blues include the possible trading of winger Keith Tkachuk.  But with a recent resurgence by the Blues to the middle of the pack for the playoff hunt, those rumors are dying down, and there are beliefs that Tkachuk may remain a Blue to give them more playoff experience.  The bottom line is this:  Tkachuk has not won a Cup and the Blues know that he could possibly bring in some more young talent from the Bruins, Rangers, Devils or any other team in the market for a forward.  Management needs to think about when Patrick Berglund, T.J. Oshie and Erik Johnson are better prepared for a Stanley Cup race.  The team could use Tkachuk to bring in some talent that could compliment those players, as well as give the aging veteran a chance at Hockey’s Holy Grail.  This decision is ultimately Tkachuk’s choice though, as he does have a no-trade clause in his contract.

t the Blues bounced back, getting a power play goal at 12:45 from their grizzled, grinding veteran, Keith Tkachuk. The goal was assisted by both Paul Kariya and Brad Boyes, who tied for the team lead in points last season. Hopefully, this goal is a sign of things to come, as they need these three experienced scorers to help lead the way on such a young team.
